Africa Regional Director Visit to Uganda

The newly appointed SPE Africa Regional Director, Dr. Riverson Oppong, embarked on a visit to Uganda to engage with Section Officers, Government Officials, Energy Sector Stakeholders, and a diverse network of professionals to explore opportunities to harness the region’s immense potential and showcase Africa’s capacity to lead on the global energy stage. This initiative aligned with our shared vision of strengthening bonds within the SPE African community.

SPE Uganda Professional Townhall Meeting

SPE Uganda Section hosted its second Professional Townhall, bringing together industry experts and young professionals to discuss the future of oil and gas in Uganda. The event, held at CNOOC Uganda Limited’s head offices, provided a platform for stakeholders to share insights, exchange ideas, and explore opportunities for growth and development. The townhall discussion centered around SPE’s role in shaping the future of the oil and gas industry in Uganda.

Total Energies CSR Scholarship 10th Year Anniversary

The SPE Uganda Section participated in the TotalEnergies Celebration of 10 years of CSR Scholarship, benefiting over 327 scholars. Anita Badagawa, the Program Chairperson of the SPE Uganda Section, participated in the panel session which discussed the role of STEM education in advancing the energy industry.

Nandyoes Idah receives the prestigious Imomoh scholarship

SPE offers scholarships and fellowships for students pursuing degrees related to the oil and gas industry. The Imomoh Scholarship was endowed to the SPE Foundation by Egbert Imomoh to support excellence in education for students from the Africa Region. The recipients are awarded a single payment of USD 2,000.

Idah Nandyoes, our Mentorship Chair, received the Imomoh Scholarship, endowed by Egbert Imomoh to support educational excellence for students from the Africa Region. Idah is now pursuing a Master of Science in Oil and Gas with Energy Management at the University of East London.

SPE Uganda mentorship programme

The SPE Uganda Mentorship Program, launched in November 2024, made significant strides, with over 300 mentees and a dedicated team of mentors. The program has successfully conducted multiple bi-weekly mentorship sessions to empower future energy professionals.

The program was unveiled on 12th November 2024, with enthusiastic participation from mentors and mentees. Mentors led impactful sessions on CV writing, interview preparation, personal development, and technical skills. Mentorship groups have leaders to streamline communication and coordinate sessions.

Art therapy networking event

The SPE Uganda Section recently held its inaugural Art Therapy Networking Event, a unique initiative that blended art therapy with professional networking. This innovative event provided participants with a relaxed and creative environment, offering a much-needed respite from the demands of the oil and gas industry. Attendees had the opportunity to unwind, explore their creativity, and foster meaningful professional connections in a non-traditional setting. The event attracted professionals from various roles within the energy sector, who appreciated the chance to engage in artistic expression while building new relationships.

ATCE is the leading technical energy conference for global E&P professionals, showcasing industry advancements. ATCE 2024 brought together a diverse community to address challenges such as the energy transition, supply chain disruptions, workforce dynamics, and inflation.

From 23rd to 25th October 2024, one of our Directors, Mr. Gilbert Omitta, participated in the ATCE 2024 in New Orleans and was involved in one of the ATCE conference committees.

2nd Oil and Gas Skills Expo

22-23 August 2024
📍 Kyambogo University, Kampala Uganda

Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), Kyambogo University, and the Oil and Gas Trainers’ Association of Uganda (OGTAU) organized the 2nd Oil and Gas Skills Expo themed “Unlocking Opportunities Through Skills Development in the Oil and Gas Industry.” The Expo brought together all of the industry’s demand-side and the skill sets available among the workforce, particularly students and recent graduates.

The SPE Uganda Section was proudly represented by our Chairperson Gideon Kibiringi and Programs Chair Anita Basiigwabo and enthusiastic student members, all geared up to connect, learn, and explore new opportunities in the oil and gas industry.

Annual MPGS Petroleum & Geology Dinner

The MPGS Dinner is an annual event organized by the Makerere University Petroleum and Geology Society. It aims to strengthen the bond between professionals and final-year students of Makerere University, preparing them for the oil and gas industry.

Last year, we participated and were represented by Ms. Anita Basiigwabo, SPE Uganda Programs Chairperson and Mubslekat Opio, who both gave career and academic guidance to the attendees. The graduates are encouraged to remain resilient in the world after graduation.

Former SPE Uganda Chairperson wins SPE service award

📍 Accra, Ghana

Mr. Kato Obatala, our Chairperson Emeritus, was among the winners of the 2024 SPE Africa Regional Service Awards. The award was presented at the Ghana Biennial International Summit and Exhibition in Accra, Ghana from 20th-21st May 2024.

The event was attended by a diverse audience from different parts of Africa, such as Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Angola, and regions that included SPE sections and student chapters. Individuals like Mr. Obatala are shaping the energy landscape in Africa. SPE Uganda congratulates him for his unwavering service and inspirational contribution.

SPE Uganda Networking Forum

The SPE Networking Forum 2024, held at Four Points by Sheraton, Kampala, was attended by industry professionals, government officials, and academic leaders. The forum served as a hub for knowledge sharing, professional networking, and strategic dialogue. It featured technical presentations, panel discussions, networking opportunities, and an awards and recognition session. Mr. Kato Obadiah Anthony, the former Chairperson of the SPE Uganda Section highlighted that Uganda, as a young entrant in the sector, is in a strategic position to learn and implement efficient exploitation of its petroleum resources.

Tour to the Albertine Graben

23-24th March 2024
📍 Kikuube, Uganda

SPE Uganda section conducted a comprehensive tour of the Albertine region, known for its growing petroleum activities, from 23rd to 24th March 2024, accompanied by representatives from the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU). The tour aimed to showcase the progress of Uganda’s oil and gas projects and their coexistence with communities and wildlife.

On 23rd March 2024, the delegation visited the Kingfisher Development Area (KFDA) in Kikuube district, including Well Pad 3, the Buhuka Gravity Water Scheme, and the resettlement housing project.

SASTCE 2024

The SASTCE 2024, held at Makerere University, was themed “Transformative Synergy with Advancing Technologies.” The event brought together a diverse audience, including students from across Africa, representatives from over ten universities, as well as professionals and academicians in the petroleum and geology sectors, to engage in discussions on advancements and innovations in the field.

The event featured paper presentations, exhibitions, networking opportunities, and knowledge-sharing panels from experienced professionals from various companies.

SPEI Delegation Visit to Uganda

On March 21, 2024, a delegation from the Society of Petroleum Engineers International (SPEI) visited Uganda to promote collaboration and knowledge exchange in the energy sector. The delegation was led by Ms. Oghogho Effiom, SPE Africa Regional Director and included Mr. Moyosore Ololuwura Davies, SPE Regional Activities Manager for Europe and Africa, Dr. Rhonda Opondo, SPE Ghana Section Director, and Ms. Samantha Vanessa Armstrong, SPE Member Programmes Senior Manager.

The delegation’s visit included various activities to strengthen ties between SPE and Uganda’s petroleum industry.

International Petroleum Technology Conference

12-14 February 2024
📍 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Every year, SPE sponsors students from around the world to attend the International Petroleum Conference. In 2024, we were represented by three students from Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Western Uganda: Faith Kyobe, Alice Lwanga, and Livine Kisakye. They connected with industry leaders, formed meaningful connections with students globally, and shared a wealth of knowledge from insightful discussions.

Among many awards they received, this cohort stood out in the student competition, with representatives Faith Kyobe and Livine Kisakye being named Best Rising Star and Panelist, respectively, and as 1st runner-up in the Slik Challenge. Likewise, Kesoa Tumuhairwe received the Best Presenter award.
